I Was Once in Your Shoes
When I first started in my career, even though my education in the Sassoon philosophy was world-class, I felt stuck. I’d only been taught to use one tool: the straight blade scissor.
In 1980 I discovered Trevor Sorbie’s 'Wolfman' haircut. It flipped my world upside down. The moment I saw it, I thought:
I want to do that. Now.
But my education hadn't given me the skills to create a style like THIS!
I got my hands on a “How-To” video tape — and when I saw Trevor using a razor, a tool we were never taught to use in my training, something shifted. I felt cheated…
Why was I only ever taught one tool?
What else was possible?
That was my lightbulb moment that changed my path forever.
I bought my first cutthroat razor — no guard, razor-sharp — and started experimenting. About forty bad haircuts (and a few angry friends) later… I mastered the Wolfman.
Once I did, I realised something bigger:
I didn’t have to follow the rules I’d been taught. I could break them — and redefine them.
I started exploring every tool: straight blades, razors, texturizers, clippers. I experimented not just with haircutting tools, but with anything that could cut hair — matches, chisels, wet, dry, blunt, textured, freehand sculpting — and through years of experimentation, I discovered the truth:

I developed a complete haircutting system based on core methods and techniques that work on any head of hair to create any style I could imagine. Eventually, I even designed my own tool — the Dare Chisel®.
